endomitosis
Endomitosis is a process where a cell undergoes DNA replication without dividing its nucleus. This results in the duplication of chromosomes within the same cell, leading to a polyploid state, where the cell contains multiple sets of chromosomes. Endomitosis is commonly observed in certain tissues, such as the liver and in some types of blood cells.
This process is different from typical mitosis, where a cell divides into two daughter cells. Endomitosis allows for increased cell size and can enhance the cell's metabolic capacity. It plays a significant role in the development of specific tissues and organisms, including some plants and animals.
