Pink and White Terraces
The Pink and White Terraces, also known as Te Tarata, were natural silica formations located near Lake Rotomahana in New Zealand. These terraces were famous for their stunning colors, created by mineral deposits from geothermal hot springs. The terraces were a popular tourist destination in the 19th century, attracting visitors with their unique beauty.
In 1886, the Pink and White Terraces were largely destroyed by the eruption of Mount Tarawera. This volcanic event buried the terraces under ash and debris, leading to their loss. Today, the site is remembered for its historical significance and natural beauty, with ongoing efforts to study and preserve its legacy.
