Peripheral Myelin Protein 22
Peripheral Myelin Protein 22 (PMP-22) is a protein primarily found in the myelin sheath of peripheral nerves. It plays a crucial role in the formation and maintenance of myelin, which insulates nerve fibers and facilitates efficient signal transmission. Mutations in the gene encoding PMP-22 can lead to various neuropathies, including Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.
PMP-22 is essential for the structural integrity of myelin and is involved in the interaction between Schwann cells, which produce myelin in the peripheral nervous system. Abnormal levels of PMP-22 can disrupt nerve function, leading to symptoms such as muscle weakness and sensory loss.
