Panthera leo spelaea (Lion)
Panthera leo spelaea, commonly known as the European cave lion, was a subspecies of lion that lived during the Pleistocene epoch. These lions were larger than modern lions and are believed to have roamed across Europe, Asia, and North America. They are often depicted in prehistoric cave art, indicating their significance in the lives of early humans.
The cave lion primarily hunted large herbivores, such as Mammuthus primigenius (woolly mammoths) and Rangifer tarandus (reindeer). They became extinct around 14,000 years ago, likely due to climate change and human hunting pressures. Fossils of this majestic creature have been found in various archaeological sites, providing insight into their biology and behavior.
