Pando
Pando is a massive clonal colony of quaking aspen trees (Populus tremuloides) located in Utah's Fishlake National Forest. It is considered one of the oldest and largest living organisms on Earth, covering approximately 106 acres and consisting of over 40,000 individual trees. All these trees share a single root system, making them genetically identical.
The name "Pando" comes from the Latin word meaning "I spread." This unique organism is estimated to be around 80,000 years old, showcasing the resilience and longevity of clonal reproduction in trees. Pando plays a crucial role in its ecosystem, providing habitat and food for various wildlife species.
