Palatine Tonsils
The palatine tonsils are two oval-shaped masses of lymphoid tissue located at the back of the throat, one on each side. They play a role in the immune system by helping to fight infections, particularly during childhood. The tonsils trap and filter out bacteria and viruses that enter the body through the mouth and nose.
Palatine tonsils are part of a group of lymphoid tissues known as Waldeyer's ring, which also includes the adenoids and lingual tonsils. They can become enlarged or infected, leading to a condition called tonsillitis. In some cases, surgical removal, known as a tonsillectomy, may be necessary.
