Tonsils are small, oval-shaped masses of lymphatic tissue located at the back of the throat. They play a role in the immune system by helping to fight off infections, especially in children. There are three types of tonsils: palatine tonsils, pharyngeal tonsils (also known as adenoids), and lingual tonsils.
When tonsils become infected or swollen, a condition known as tonsillitis can occur, leading to symptoms like sore throat, difficulty swallowing, and fever. In some cases, doctors may recommend a tonsillectomy, which is a surgical procedure to remove the tonsils, especially if infections are frequent.
