Oyo Empire
The Oyo Empire was a powerful Yoruba state located in present-day southwestern Nigeria. It emerged in the 15th century and became one of the most influential empires in West Africa. The empire was known for its advanced political system, which included a centralized government led by the Alafin, or king, and a council of nobles.
The Oyo Empire thrived on trade, agriculture, and military strength. It controlled important trade routes and engaged in commerce with neighboring regions. The empire's influence extended beyond its borders, impacting the culture and politics of surrounding areas, including the Dahomey and Benin kingdoms.
