Oxbow
An "oxbow" is a U-shaped bend in a river or stream that forms when a meander is cut off from the main flow of water. This occurs over time due to erosion and sediment deposition, creating a distinct loop. Oxbows can eventually become isolated bodies of water, known as oxbow lakes, which may support unique ecosystems.
Oxbows are important in ecology as they provide habitats for various species of plants and animals. They also play a role in flood control by absorbing excess water during heavy rainfall, helping to reduce the impact of flooding on surrounding areas.
