Overhead Camshaft
An Overhead Camshaft (OHC) is a type of engine design where the camshaft is located above the engine's cylinders. This setup allows for more precise control of the engine's valves, improving performance and efficiency. OHC engines can have one or more camshafts, with configurations like Single Overhead Camshaft (SOHC) and Double Overhead Camshaft (DOHC).
The OHC design reduces the number of moving parts compared to older systems, such as Overhead Valve (OHV) engines, which have the camshaft located in the engine block. This results in lighter engines and can lead to higher engine speeds, enhancing overall power output.
