Outsider Art
Outsider Art refers to artwork created by individuals who are not formally trained in the arts and often work outside the mainstream art world. This type of art is typically produced by self-taught artists, including those who may be marginalized due to mental illness, social isolation, or economic disadvantage. The work is characterized by its raw, unfiltered expression and unique perspectives.
The term was popularized in the 1970s by art critic Roger Cardinal, who sought to highlight the creativity of these artists. Outsider Art often challenges conventional artistic norms and can include various mediums, such as painting, sculpture, and mixed media.
