Opuntia
Opuntia, commonly known as prickly pear, is a genus of cacti native to the Americas. These plants are characterized by their flat, paddle-shaped segments and vibrant flowers. They thrive in arid environments and can store water in their pads, making them well-suited for dry climates.
The fruit of the Opuntia, called prickly pear or tuna, is edible and often used in jams, jellies, and beverages. The pads, known as nopales, are also consumed as a vegetable in various dishes. Both the fruit and pads are rich in nutrients and have been used in traditional medicine for their health benefits.
