Operation Varsity
Operation Varsity was a significant military operation during World War II, taking place on March 24, 1945. It involved the Allied Forces, primarily the U.S. 17th Airborne Division and the British 6th Airborne Division, who aimed to secure a crossing over the Rhine River in Germany. This operation was part of the larger Rhine Campaign to advance into the heart of Germany.
The operation was notable for being one of the largest airborne assaults in history, with over 16,000 paratroopers dropped behind enemy lines. The successful execution of Operation Varsity helped facilitate the rapid advance of ground forces and contributed to the eventual defeat of Nazi Germany.
