Oneida Community
The Oneida Community was a religious and social movement founded in 1848 in Oneida, New York, by John Humphrey Noyes. It aimed to create a utopian society based on communal living, shared property, and a unique interpretation of Christianity. The community practiced complex marriage, where all members were considered married to one another, promoting equality and eliminating traditional family structures.
The Oneida Community thrived for several decades, engaging in various industries, including manufacturing and agriculture. By the late 19th century, internal conflicts and changing societal norms led to its decline. In 1881, the community transitioned into a joint-stock company, eventually evolving into the Oneida Limited silverware business.
