Odontoblasts
Odontoblasts are specialized cells located in the dental pulp of teeth. They play a crucial role in the formation of dentin, the hard tissue that makes up the bulk of a tooth beneath the enamel. These cells are responsible for producing and maintaining the dentin matrix, which provides structural support and protection for the tooth.
Odontoblasts are derived from neural crest cells during tooth development. They have long, slender processes that extend into the dentin, allowing them to communicate with other cells and respond to stimuli, such as tooth decay or injury. This ability helps in the repair and regeneration of dentin throughout a person's life.
