Nontuberculous Mycobacteria
Nontuberculous Mycobacteria (NTM) are a group of bacteria found in the environment, including soil and water. Unlike Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which causes tuberculosis, NTM typically do not spread from person to person. They can, however, cause infections, particularly in individuals with weakened immune systems or underlying lung conditions.
NTM infections can affect the lungs, skin, and other parts of the body. Symptoms may include cough, fatigue, and weight loss, similar to those of tuberculosis. Diagnosis often requires specific laboratory tests, and treatment usually involves a prolonged course of antibiotics tailored to the specific type of NTM involved.
