Nivelle's Battle
Nivelle's Battle, fought in April and May 1917, was a major offensive during World War I, led by French General Robert Nivelle. The battle aimed to break through German lines along the Chemin des Dames ridge, with the goal of achieving a decisive victory for the Allies.
Despite initial optimism, the offensive faced strong German defenses and poor weather conditions, leading to heavy casualties. The French forces suffered around 120,000 casualties, and the battle ultimately failed to achieve its objectives, contributing to growing discontent within the French army and leading to mutinies later that year.
