Nicolae Ceaușescu's Regime
Nicolae Ceaușescu's regime in Romania lasted from 1965 until 1989. It was characterized by a totalitarian government that suppressed political dissent and controlled many aspects of daily life. Ceaușescu promoted a cult of personality, portraying himself as a visionary leader while implementing strict censorship and propaganda.
The regime's economic policies focused on heavy industrialization, often at the expense of agriculture and living standards. This led to widespread poverty and food shortages, culminating in public discontent. In December 1989, protests erupted, resulting in Ceaușescu's overthrow and execution, marking the end of his oppressive rule.
