Nelson Dewey
Nelson Dewey was an American politician who served as the first governor of the state of Wisconsin. He held office from 1848 to 1852, shortly after Wisconsin achieved statehood. Dewey was a member of the Democratic Party and played a significant role in shaping the early government of the state.
Born on December 19, 1813, in New York, Dewey moved to Wisconsin in 1836. Before becoming governor, he was involved in local politics and served in various roles, including as a member of the Wisconsin Territorial Legislature. After his governorship, he continued to be active in public service and local affairs until his death in 1889.
