Native American Policy
Native American Policy refers to the laws and regulations established by the United States government regarding the treatment and management of Indigenous peoples. These policies have evolved over time, from early treaties that recognized tribal sovereignty to more recent efforts aimed at promoting self-determination and economic development within Native communities.
Historically, policies often aimed to assimilate Native Americans into mainstream American society, leading to the loss of land and cultural identity. Today, there is a focus on respecting the rights of tribes, such as those outlined in the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act and the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.
