Mylohyoid
The mylohyoid is a thin, flat muscle located in the floor of the mouth. It forms a supportive structure for the tongue and helps in the movement of the jaw during chewing and swallowing. The muscle stretches from the mandible (lower jaw) to the hyoid bone, which is situated in the neck.
This muscle is innervated by the mylohyoid nerve, a branch of the trigeminal nerve. The mylohyoid plays a crucial role in elevating the floor of the mouth and the tongue, facilitating speech and the initial stages of digestion.
