Geniohyoid
The geniohyoid is a small muscle located in the neck, specifically beneath the tongue. It originates from the mental spine of the mandible (lower jaw) and inserts into the body of the hyoid bone. This muscle plays a crucial role in swallowing and speaking by helping to move the hyoid bone and the floor of the mouth.
In addition to its function in swallowing, the geniohyoid assists in the movement of the tongue. It is innervated by the hypoglossal nerve, which is responsible for controlling tongue movements. Proper functioning of the geniohyoid is essential for effective communication and digestion.
