Murlidhar Amte
Murlidhar Amte, often known as Baba Amte, was an influential Indian social activist and advocate for the rights of people with disabilities. Born on December 26, 1918, he dedicated his life to improving the lives of leprosy patients and marginalized communities. He founded the Anandwan community in Maharashtra, which became a model for rehabilitation and empowerment.
Amte's work extended beyond leprosy, as he championed various social causes, including environmental conservation and the rights of the underprivileged. His efforts earned him numerous awards, including the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian honor, recognizing his commitment to social justice and humanitarian work.
