Munda Rebellion
The Munda Rebellion, also known as the Ulgulan or "Great Rebellion," took place in the late 19th century in the region of present-day Jharkhand, India. It was led by Birsa Munda, a tribal leader who sought to establish Munda Raj and fight against British colonial rule and the exploitation of tribal lands by landlords. The rebellion aimed to restore the rights of the indigenous Munda people and protect their cultural identity.
The uprising began in 1899 and involved various tribal communities uniting against oppressive practices, including forced labor and land dispossession. Despite initial successes, the rebellion was ultimately suppressed by British forces, leading to the arrest and death of Birsa Munda in 1900. The Munda Rebellion remains a significant event in Indian history, symbolizing the struggle for tribal rights and autonomy.
