Mozambican National Resistance
The Mozambican National Resistance (RENAMO) is a political and military organization that emerged in the 1970s during Mozambique's struggle for independence from Portuguese colonial rule. Founded in 1975, RENAMO initially aimed to oppose the ruling party, the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (FRELIMO), and sought to represent the interests of various ethnic groups in the country.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, RENAMO engaged in a brutal civil war against FRELIMO, which resulted in significant loss of life and displacement of people. The conflict officially ended in 1992 with a peace agreement, leading to RENAMO's transition into a political party and its participation in Mozambique's democratic processes.
