Mozambican Liberation Front
The Mozambican Liberation Front, known as FRELIMO, is a political party in Mozambique that was founded in 1962. It emerged as a nationalist movement aimed at gaining independence from Portuguese colonial rule. FRELIMO led a successful armed struggle against the Portuguese, culminating in Mozambique's independence in 1975.
After independence, FRELIMO became the ruling party and focused on socialist policies and national development. However, the party faced challenges, including a civil war against the Mozambique National Resistance (RENAMO), which lasted from 1977 to 1992. Today, FRELIMO remains a dominant force in Mozambican politics.
