Moses Sofer
Moses Sofer, also known as the Chatam Sofer, was a prominent Jewish scholar and rabbi born in 1762 in Germany. He is best known for his contributions to Jewish law and philosophy, particularly in the context of the Haskalah movement. Sofer emphasized the importance of traditional Jewish practices while also engaging with modernity.
He served as the chief rabbi of Pressburg (now Bratislava, Slovakia) and founded a significant yeshiva that attracted many students. His teachings and writings, including responsa and commentaries, continue to influence Jewish thought and practice today, making him a key figure in Orthodox Judaism.
