Moro National Liberation Front
The Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) is a political organization in the Philippines that advocates for the rights and autonomy of the Moro people, who are predominantly Muslim. Founded in 1972, the MNLF aimed to establish an independent state in the southern region of Mindanao, where many Moro communities reside. The group has been involved in armed conflict with the Philippine government but has also engaged in peace negotiations.
In 1996, the MNLF signed a peace agreement with the Philippine government, leading to the establishment of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM). Despite this, some factions within the MNLF continue to seek greater autonomy or independence. The organization has played a significant role in the ongoing discussions about the political status and rights of the Moro people in the Philippines.
