Monophony
Monophony is a type of musical texture that consists of a single melodic line without any harmonic support or accompaniment. This means that only one voice or instrument is performing the melody, making it straightforward and clear. Monophonic music can be found in various cultures and is often used in traditional songs, chants, and early forms of music.
In contrast to polyphony, where multiple independent melodies are sung or played simultaneously, monophony focuses solely on one melody. This style was prevalent in medieval music, particularly in Gregorian chant, which is a form of liturgical music used in Christian worship.
