Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve
The Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve is a UNESCO World Heritage site located in central Mexico. It serves as a crucial habitat for the Monarch butterfly, which migrates thousands of miles from North America to this region each year. The reserve covers approximately 56,000 acres of forested mountains, providing a safe environment for these butterflies during their winter hibernation.
Established in 1980, the reserve aims to protect the unique ecosystem that supports the Monarch butterfly population. It features a variety of flora and fauna, including fir and pine trees, which create the ideal microclimate for the butterflies. Conservation efforts are ongoing to ensure the survival of this remarkable species.
