The Monachus monachus, commonly known as the Mediterranean monk seal, is a marine mammal found primarily in the Mediterranean Sea and the northeastern Atlantic Ocean. This species is characterized by its robust body, short limbs, and a thick layer of blubber, which helps it stay warm in cooler waters. Adult seals can weigh between 200 to 300 kilograms and measure up to 2.5 meters in length. Mediterranean monk seals are known for their social behavior, often seen resting on rocky shores or in caves. They primarily feed on fish, squid, and crustaceans. Unfortunately, this species is critically endangered due to habitat loss, hunting, and pollution, making conservation efforts essential for its survival.
