Mohammad Sadeq al-Sadr
Mohammad Sadeq al-Sadr was an influential Iraqi Shia cleric and political leader born in 1943. He became a prominent figure in Iraq during the 1990s, advocating for social justice and the rights of the poor. Al-Sadr was known for his opposition to the regime of Saddam Hussein and his efforts to empower the Shia community in Iraq.
In 1999, al-Sadr was assassinated, which led to his followers forming the Sadrist Movement. This movement has played a significant role in Iraqi politics, especially after the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003, continuing to influence the socio-political landscape of Iraq.
