Mixed Member Proportional
Mixed Member Proportional (MMP) is an electoral system that combines two methods of voting to create a more representative outcome. Voters typically cast two ballots: one for a candidate in their local district and another for a political party. This allows for both local representation and proportionality in the overall election results.
In MMP, the total number of seats a party receives in the legislature is based on the percentage of party votes they receive. This means that if a party gets a significant share of the vote but wins few local seats, they can still gain additional seats to reflect their overall support, leading to a more balanced representation of voters' preferences.
