Military Junta of 1967
The Military Junta of 1967 in Greece was a group of military officers who seized power in a coup d'état on April 21, 1967. This regime, led by Colonel Georgios Papadopoulos, aimed to prevent what they perceived as a drift towards communism and instability in the country. The junta suspended the constitution, imposed martial law, and restricted civil liberties.
The junta ruled until 1974, during which time it faced widespread opposition and protests. The regime's authoritarian practices included censorship and the imprisonment of political dissidents. The junta ultimately collapsed following the Cyprus Crisis in 1974, leading to the restoration of democracy in Greece.
