Methyl Mercaptan
Methyl mercaptan, also known as methanethiol, is a colorless gas with a strong, unpleasant odor similar to rotten cabbage. It is a simple organosulfur compound, primarily used in the production of pesticides and plastics. Methyl mercaptan is also a byproduct of natural processes, such as the breakdown of organic matter.
This compound is highly flammable and can be toxic in high concentrations. Exposure may cause irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory system. Due to its strong smell, methyl mercaptan is often used as an odorant in natural gas to help detect leaks.
