Metatarsal Bones
The metatarsal bones are five long bones located in the middle part of the foot. They connect the tarsal bones at the back of the foot to the phalanges, which are the toe bones. Each metatarsal bone is numbered from one to five, starting with the big toe. These bones play a crucial role in supporting body weight and enabling movement.
Each metatarsal bone consists of three parts: the base, shaft, and head. The base connects to the tarsal bones, while the head forms the ball of the foot. The metatarsals help with balance and provide stability during activities like walking, running, and jumping.
