Mayor of the Palace
The "Mayor of the Palace" was a high-ranking official in the Frankish kingdoms during the early Middle Ages. This position emerged in the 7th century and involved managing the royal household and overseeing the administration of the kingdom. The Mayor acted as a key advisor to the king and held significant power, often controlling military and political decisions.
Over time, the role of the Mayor of the Palace became more influential, especially under the Carolingian dynasty. Notably, Charles Martel, a famous Mayor, played a crucial role in defending against invasions, such as the Battle of Tours in 732. Eventually, the position evolved into the de facto leadership of the kingdom, leading to the rise of the Carolingian Empire.
