Mathilde of Flanders
Mathilde of Flanders was a noblewoman born around 1031, known for her role as the wife of William the Conqueror. She was the daughter of Baldwin V, Count of Flanders and Adela of France, which connected her to powerful European families. Mathilde played a significant role in the Norman conquest of England and was influential in the establishment of the Norman dynasty.
As the first Queen of England after the conquest, Mathilde was known for her piety and support of the church. She helped found several religious institutions, including the Abbey of Caen. Mathilde and William had several children, including Henry I of England, who would later become king.
