March 1st Movement
The March 1st Movement was a significant protest in 1919 against Japanese colonial rule in Korea. It began on March 1, when a group of Korean activists declared independence, inspired by the global wave of self-determination following World War I. The movement quickly spread across the country, with thousands participating in peaceful demonstrations.
In response, the Japanese government violently suppressed the protests, leading to widespread arrests and casualties. Despite the harsh crackdown, the movement became a symbol of Korean nationalism and resilience, ultimately contributing to the ongoing struggle for Korean independence, which was achieved in 1945.
