Marcelo Caetano
Marcelo Caetano was a Portuguese politician and lawyer, best known for serving as the Prime Minister of Portugal from 1968 to 1974. He succeeded António de Oliveira Salazar, who had led the country for decades. Caetano continued Salazar's authoritarian regime, known as the Estado Novo, which emphasized nationalism and conservatism.
His tenure ended with the Carnation Revolution in April 1974, a peaceful coup that aimed to overthrow the dictatorship. Following the revolution, Caetano fled to exile in Brazil, marking the end of an era in Portuguese history and paving the way for the establishment of a democratic government.
