Manicouagan Impact Structure
The Manicouagan Impact Structure is a large circular geological formation located in northeastern Quebec, Canada. It was created by a meteorite impact approximately 214 million years ago, making it one of the oldest and largest impact craters on Earth. The structure has a diameter of about 100 kilometers and is characterized by a central island, known as Osisko Island, which is surrounded by a ring of hills.
This impact structure is significant for scientific research, as it provides insights into the effects of meteorite impacts on Earth's geology. The surrounding area contains various rock types and minerals that have been altered by the intense heat and pressure from the impact. Today, the Manicouagan Impact Structure is also a popular site for geological studies and tourism.
