Man and the Biosphere Programme
The Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB) is an initiative launched by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1971. Its primary goal is to promote sustainable development through research and conservation in natural ecosystems. MAB encourages interdisciplinary approaches to understanding the relationship between humans and the environment.
The program designates specific areas known as Biosphere Reserves, which serve as sites for testing and demonstrating sustainable practices. These reserves aim to balance biodiversity conservation with the needs of local communities, fostering collaboration between scientists, policymakers, and the public to ensure a healthy planet for future generations.
