Malayan Democratic Union
The Malayan Democratic Union (MDU) was formed in 1945 as the first political party in British Malaya. It aimed to represent the interests of the local population and promote self-governance. The MDU was composed mainly of the Chinese and Indian communities, advocating for a united Malaya and greater political rights.
The MDU played a significant role in the post-World War II political landscape, pushing for reforms and independence from British colonial rule. However, it faced challenges from other political groups and eventually dissolved in 1947, paving the way for the formation of new parties that would continue the struggle for independence, such as the United Malays National Organization (UMNO).
