Major General John A. McClernand
Major General John A. McClernand was a Union general during the American Civil War. Born on May 30, 1812, in Illinois, he initially worked as a lawyer and politician before joining the military. McClernand played a significant role in several key battles, including the Battle of Shiloh and the Siege of Vicksburg.
Despite his contributions, McClernand's leadership was often criticized, leading to tensions with other commanders, such as Ulysses S. Grant. He was eventually relieved of command in 1863. After the war, he returned to politics, serving in the U.S. House of Representatives until his death on September 20, 1880.
