Maine Indian Claims Settlement Act
The Maine Indian Claims Settlement Act, enacted in 1980, aimed to resolve land claims by the Penobscot, Passamaquoddy, Maliseet, and Abenaki tribes in Maine. The Act provided financial compensation and established a framework for tribal governance, recognizing the tribes' rights to self-determination and land use.
Under the Act, the tribes received approximately $81.5 million, which was intended to settle historical grievances related to land loss. Additionally, the legislation allowed for the establishment of tribal lands and provided for the management of resources, fostering economic development and cultural preservation within the tribes.
