Mahaweli
The Mahaweli River is the longest river in Sri Lanka, stretching approximately 335 kilometers. It originates from the central highlands and flows through various landscapes, including lush forests and agricultural areas, before emptying into the Bay of Bengal. The river plays a crucial role in the country's irrigation and hydropower generation.
The Mahaweli Development Program, initiated in the 1970s, aimed to harness the river's potential for agriculture and energy. This program led to the construction of several dams and reservoirs, such as the Victoria Dam and Kotmale Dam, significantly contributing to Sri Lanka's economy and improving the livelihoods of many communities.
