Lower Order Thinking
Lower Order Thinking (LOT) refers to basic cognitive processes that involve simple recall and understanding of information. This type of thinking includes skills such as remembering facts, recognizing patterns, and summarizing ideas. It is often associated with foundational learning, where students focus on acquiring knowledge without deep analysis or evaluation.
LOT is commonly used in educational settings, especially in early grades, to help students build a strong knowledge base. Activities like memorizing vocabulary, answering multiple-choice questions, and identifying main ideas are examples of LOT. These skills serve as a stepping stone for more complex thinking, known as Higher Order Thinking (HOT), which involves analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.
