Love waves
Love waves are a type of seismic wave that travel through the Earth during an earthquake. Named after the British mathematician A.E.H. Love, these waves move the ground horizontally, causing significant shaking. They are surface waves, meaning they travel along the Earth's surface rather than through its interior.
These waves are slower than P-waves and S-waves, which are the primary types of seismic waves. However, Love waves can be particularly damaging due to their horizontal motion, which can affect buildings and structures. Understanding these waves helps scientists assess earthquake impacts and improve safety measures.
