Lota lota
The Lota lota, commonly known as the burbot, is a freshwater fish found in cold waters of North America, Europe, and Asia. It is the only member of the family Lotidae and is characterized by its elongated body, a single barbel on its chin, and a mottled brown or greenish coloration. Burbot are primarily nocturnal and prefer habitats with rocky or sandy bottoms.
Burbot are known for their unique reproductive behavior, spawning in winter under ice. They are a popular target for anglers due to their tasty white flesh. Additionally, they play a role in the ecosystem as both predator and prey, contributing to the balance of aquatic life.
