Lomé Peace Agreement
The Lomé Peace Agreement was signed on July 7, 1999, in Lomé, the capital of Togo, to end the civil war in Sierra Leone. The agreement was reached between the government and the Revolutionary United Front (RUF), a rebel group. It aimed to establish peace, disarm combatants, and promote national reconciliation.
Key provisions of the agreement included the granting of amnesty to the RUF and the establishment of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The agreement also called for the disarmament of rebel fighters and the reintegration of former combatants into society, paving the way for democratic elections in Sierra Leone.
